How Caffeine Affects Kids

A stimulant that affects kids and adults similarly, caffeine is a drug that’s naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. Caffeine is also made artificially and added to certain foods. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system. At lower levels, it can make people feel more alert and energetic.

In both kids and adults, too much caffeine can cause:

  • jitteriness and nervousness
  • upset stomach
  • headaches
  • difficulty concentrating
  • difficulty sleeping
  • increased heart rate

Especially in young kids, it doesn’t take a lot of caffeine to produce these effects.

Other reasons to limit kids’ caffeine consumption include:

  • Kids who consume one or more 12-ounce (355-milliliter) sweetened soft drink per day are 60% more likely to be obese.
  • Drinking too many sweetened caffeinated drinks could lead to dental cavities (or caries) from the high sugar content and the erosion of tooth enamel from acidity. Not convinced that sodas can wreak that much havoc on kids’ teeth? Consider this: One 12-ounce (355-milliliter) nondiet, carbonated soft drink contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar (49 milliliters) and 150 calories.
  • Caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to eliminate water (through urinating), which may contribute to dehydration. Whether the amount of caffeine in beverages is enough to actually cause dehydration is not clear, however. It may depend on whether the person drinking the beverage is used to caffeine and how much caffeine was consumed that day. To be on the safe side, it’s wise to avoid excessive caffeine consumption in hot weather, when kids need to replace water lost through perspiration.
  • Abruptly stopping caffeine may cause withdrawal symptoms (headaches, muscle aches, temporary depression, and irritability), especially for those who are used to consuming a lot.
  • Caffeine can aggravate heart problems or nervous disorders, and some kids may not be aware that they’re at risk.
  • Not only do caffeinated beverages contain empty calories (calories that don’t provide any nutrients), but kids who fill up on them don’t get the vitamins and minerals they need from healthy sources, putting them at risk for nutritional deficiencies. In particular, kids who drink too much soda (which usually starts between the third and eighth grades) may miss getting the calcium they need from milk to build strong bones and teeth.

What’s in your Products?

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Commercial products are typically loaded with preservatives to allow them to remain fresh during the long span between the time of manufacture and the time the customer finishes using it. Although the preservatives do extend the longevity of the products but  preservatives themselves are unhealthy. Many cause or promote skin problems and some are even reported to be linked to cancer.

It is very important to use preservative-free products.

Green Smoothies

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Did you know that through one green smoothie you can consume 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables? Did you also know that eating green smoothies is one of the easiest way to digest the full nutrients of fruits and vegetables?

Green Smoothies

They can assist in boosting energy, building your immune system, detoxing impurities, and loosing weight. Greens are rich in magnesium and alkaline minerals like calcium and are superb in their Omega-3 unsaturated fat content.  Believe it or not, greens are one of the richest sources of protein.

The best combination is a balance of 40% greens to 60% fruits. Keep the greens varied as well. Spinach is our favorite, in addition to kale. Other options include:  celery, chard, romaine, alfalfa, parsley, beet greens, and collard greens.

I have found you can make a green smoothie out of pretty much any fruit and greens combination! Green Smoothies are aslo a great way to get your kids to eat veggies without a fight.

Green Smoothie blender

Check out the vita mix blender.

Next time your out shopping, grab some baby spinach and don’t be shy when you add it to your daily smoothie (if you’re not having a daily smoothie, you need to start. They are a powerhouse of nutrition, they taste great and they are quick to make.

Your body can absorb more of the vitamins and minerals than if you ate the fruits and vegetables whole. Many of the nutrients are stuck in the fiber and by blending fruits and vegetables, you break down the fiber and release the vital nutrients into a form your body can more easily use.

Brain Power Smoothie:

6 – 8 ounces of organic apple juice, almond milk or rice milk

¼ cup frozen organic blueberries or other frozen organic fruit

2 TBS of freshly ground organic flax seed

1 ripe banana

¼ cup organic strawberries

Put in smoothie maker or blend and enjoy twice a day for awesome mental alertness and ability to think clearer.

It’s a lifestyle you will never want to quit living!!

What is Endometriosis?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. The growths are commonly referred to as “endometrial implants.”

“An estimated 89 million women and girls worldwide have endometriosis”

Diagnosis of endometriosis usually involves a laparoscopy, a complete medical history, a physical examination, and other tests.

Endometrial implants typically inset in other parts of the reproductive tract, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the inside lining of the abdominal cavity, and the outside surfaces of the uterus or intestines. They can also occur in other parts of the body, including the liver, legs, lungs, and rarely, the brain.

The implants are not malignant (cancerous), but the disease may be progressive and symptoms worsen as the patient experiences more menstrual cycles. Because they are made of the same uterine tissue that is shed during menstruation, endometrial implants also break up monthly. The result is internal bleeding, inflammation, chronic pelvic pain, and the formation of blood-filled cysts and scar tissue. Pain is the most prevalent symptom, and nearly 90% of women with chronic pelvic pain have endometriosis.

Scar tissue in the fallopian tubes can interrupt an egg’s passage, resulting in infertility. Some patients do not know they have endometriosis until they have an infertility evaluation. As many as 50% of infertile women have endometriosis. About one-third of women with endometriosis do not experience symptoms.

There are many medical causes of endometriosis. Any woman can experience the pain and/or infertility associated with endometrial implants.

What are endometrial cells?

The endometrium is the mucous surface that lines the inside of the uterus. It contains several layers of cells (i.e., endometrial cells) that vary in appearance and number throughout the menstrual cycle, as the levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. During the luteal phase (the two-week period just before a woman bleeds), for example, the endometrium is thick, its cells are enlarged, the glands bulge, and the arteries are swollen. At menstruation, the endometrium sheds. Following menstruation, new cells grow and the endometrium regenerates. The cells that make up the endometrium normally grow only inside the uterus.

Endometriosis is associated with a variety of symptoms, but there is no consistent pattern and not all women are symptomatic. The two most common symptoms are pain and infertility. Over time, depending on where the endometrial tissue has implanted, other symptoms may appear.

The most common symptom is chronic pelvic pain that generally occurs just before and during menstruation and then decreases after menstruation. About 25% to 67% of women with endometriosis suffer dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). About 25% experience painful intercourse. Pelvic examinations can also be painful.

Infertility is common. In fact, infertility is the most common symptom that prompts a visit to the doctor’s office for diagnosis.

Endometriosis that develops in other parts of the pelvic region may result in bowel-related or urinary tract symptoms (e.g., painful or difficult bowel movements, bloody urine). If the lungs are involved, endometriosis may cause pleuritic pain (the pleura is the thin layer of tissue that coats and protects the lungs) or hemoptysis. If endometrial cells implant in the brain, the patient may experience seizures.

Endometriosis may be caused by retrograde menstruation, coelomic metaplasia, and congenital factors. The immune system may allow endometrial cells to establish themselves in other parts of the body and exposure to dioxin and related environmental toxins may also play a role.

Retrograde menstruation (also known as “reverse menstruation”) occurs when blood and endometrial tissue back up into the fallopian tubes and enter the pelvic and abdominal cavities instead of flowing out through the cervix and vagina. Reverse menstruation is common, occurring in about 90% of women, and may cause endometriosis.

“Metaplasia” refers to the transformation of one kind of tissue into another. Coelomic metaplasia refers to cells that transform into endometrial cells, perhaps as a result of chronic inflammation or irritation from retrograde menstrual blood.

Endometriosis may be a congenital condition (existed from birth). During fetal development, uterine tissue may remain in the pelvis and grow as a result of hormonal influence.

There may also be a link between exposure to certain chemicals also known as Xenohormones and endometriosis. Research on rhesus monkeys shows a link between exposure to dioxin and endometriosis. The greater the exposure to dioxin, the more severe the endometriosis. Dioxin is a byproduct of pesticide (manufacturing and use) and bleached pulp and paper products manufacturing. The chemical can also be produced through burning of hazardous waste and can lead to Estrogen Dominance which increases the risks of developing endometriosis and once you have it making your symptoms worse.

Endometriosis is usually diagnosed on the basis of a history of pelvic pain, a physical examination, and a laparoscopy. Pelvic pain is symptomatic of many disorders, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy. It is not definitive.

Laparoscopy is the most important diagnostic tool for endometriosis. Not all women require a laparascopy, however. Patients with mild or moderate symptoms often choose natural alternative treatment.

About 90% of women with pelvic pain have endometriosis. Pelvic pain that is typical of endometriosis includes menstrual cramps, low back pain that worsens during menstruation, and pain in the pelvis that occurs during or after sexual intercourse. Depending on where the implants are located, a woman may feel pain in her rectum during defecation.

A pelvic examination involves the physician feeling and looking for abnormalities that are associated with endometriosis. Physical findings depend on the severity and location of the condition. There may be palpable nodules or tenderness in the pelvic region, enlarged ovaries, a tipped-back (retrodisplaced or retroflexed) uterus, or lesions on the vagina or on surgical scars.

A laparoscopy is an exploratory procedure that permits the physician to see inside the pelvic region to observe endometrial growths. The procedure involves making a small incision near the navel and inserting a laparascope (long, thin, lighted instrument). Usually, the endometrial implants can easily be seen. Because endometrial implants vary in appearance and can be mistaken for other conditions, the lesions usually must be surgically removed and examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. After laparoscopy, patients can usually resume normal activities in about a day.

Endometriosis is usually not a problem as long as a woman menstruates, but treatment can relieve the pain and restore fertility. Treatment depends on whether the primary goal is to relieve pain, restore fertility, or both.

Herbal medicine is the treatment of disease using medicinal plants, both internally and externally, to restore the patient back to health. It is a system of medicine that relies on the therapeutic qualities of plants to help the patient by enhancing the body’s own recuperative powers. It is a natural method of healing based on the traditional usage of herbs coupled with modern scientific developments.

Though there are those in the orthodox medical world who ignore herbal medicine, even condemn it, the constituents of herbs have provided the blueprint for many of the most effective and widely known drugs used today. ‘Orthodox’ medicine has its roots in herbal medicine.

Orthodox medicine is based on drugs isolated from plants, or more often manufactured in the laboratory. The herbalist advocates the use of the whole plant as a gentler and safer way to restoring a women to health.

For the treatment of Endometriosis, one of the first tasks in herbal medicine is to try and re-balance the hormone levels in the body. Then other herbs will be introduced to strengthen the immune system so that the body can then begin to eliminate the disease. As with other alternative treatments, using herbal medicine for Endometriosis will involve a time commitment to achieve success.

Natural Alternatives for Endometriosis

Herbal Formula (ProSoothe)

ProSoothe is an all natural herbal formula that significantly improves uterine fibroids and pelvic pain/cramps, irritability, tension, mood swings, acne, headaches, breast pain, bloating and weight gain.

Also found in this synergistic herbal formula is dandelion and vitex,(chaste tree) that helps the body remove exogenous,(external excess estrogen)from hormone therapy or contaminated food,(xenosteroids).

With time the monthly pains gradually subside as monthly bleeding in these islets becomes less, and healing of the inflammatory sites occurs.

Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains gamma-linolenic acid which is an omega-6 fatty acid. Omega-6 fatty acids decrease inflammation which helps with aberrant endometrial islets which respond monthly to the hormonal changes and become inflamed and shed like normal menstrual tissue.

Exercise. Though many women can’t begin to think of exercising when they’re in so much pain, it’s proven that just ten minutes of moderate activity can release endorphins into your body. And these endorphins provide your body with similar effects that morphine does, so pain can be dramatically reduced.

If you’re in a lot of pain however, then you won’t be able to do any major strenuous exercising. Try lower impact exercises such as swimming, walking or yoga instead.

2. Yoga. This has become a popular natural treatment for endometriosis, because it teaches you how to be more aware of your body, and integrates relaxation and meditation techniques which can help sooth, calm, relieve tension, and reduce pain.

3. Accupuncture, Aromatherapy, and Massage. Massage is a well known technique that helps soothe and relax sore or painful muscles. The gentle contact is also thought to be soothing psychologically as well. Aromatherapy is used with certain essential oils that are known for stimulating endorphins and encouraging relaxation. Acupuncture also works by stimulating endorphins and certain types of hormones too.

4. Dietary changes. Many women have found that certain foods actually stimulate more pain, and by avoiding these foods they find themselves virtually pain free during their periods. Tomatoes for instance, can cause severe increases in pain for some women with endometriosis, so avoiding those and other problem foods helps reduce the problems drastically.

Other women have had excellent success with food changes that are designed to limit or restrict candida yeast growth. Some of these natural techniques include reducing sugars and simple carbohydrates; avoiding wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, and refined foods; and increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in your diet.

Omega 3 fatty acids can be increased with simple fish or flax oil supplements, or you can start eating more fresh fish or flax seeds too.

There are also foods which can help balance your hormone levels. Some of these include garlic, broccoli, apples, parsley, nuts and seeds, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, carrots, rhubarb, and sage.

5. Vitamins and Minerals. Women who suffer from endometriosis can often get natural relief by improving their vitamin and mineral intake. This can be done through foods, but it can also be done using herbal supplements. Increasing calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, Vitamins A, B, C, and E can all help dramatically with a variety of symptoms and problems that come with endometriosis.

What About Kids’ Nutrition At School?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

We give our kids all this sugar & we wonder why they are so hyper and can’t focus…..

At the beginning of each school year, I discuss with my son’s teacher that I do not want my child given sugar or other refined food products as rewards in the classroom. You do have that right to ask the teacher not to provide your kid with junk food—just like you wouldn’t expect her provide your kid with junk curriculum! Put it on that form they have you fill out the first day, under “allergies,” if you want.

I always  provide the teacher with some whole-food snacks to put in her drawer, whole-grain, naturally sweetened granola bars, for instance). That way, when a parent brings birthday cupcakes or donuts at 9 a.m., my child doesn’t go without a treat but also doesn’t have a blood-sugar jolt in the form of toxic food.

3 smoothies to go

It is so very important what we put in our kids body, it affects how they learn and how they feel & act during the day. Every parent is not going to like or understand but if you purchase the snacks that you want your child to eat then you should not have any problems. Remember … Natural Workz Best!!

Caffeine’s Effects on the Developing Fetus

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Caffeine easily passes from mother to fetus through the placenta. A developing fetus may have higher, sustained blood levels of caffeine than its mother because of immature metabolism.3 A few studies have shown that even moderate caffeine consumption affects fetal heart rate and movement patterns.3 A pregnant woman’s ability to metabolize caffeine slows as pregnancy progresses, so some of its effects may increase later in pregnancy. Some studies have found that pregnant women who consumed large quantities of caffeine (five or more cups of coffee a day) were twice as likely to miscarry as those who consumed less, while fewer or no effects were seen at lower levels of caffeine consumption.

High caffeine consumption during pregnancy may shorten gestation and lower birth weight. Both effects appear modest in terms of days and ounces, but may be important to an infant already compromised by prematurity or fetal growth restriction. Such effects have not been consistently linked to moderate consumption. A reported link between heavy maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and increased risk of SIDS8 has not been supported by further studies. Breast milk can transfer caffeine from mother to baby. Very high caffeine intake by a nursing mother may make her baby irritable, with disturbed sleep cycles, but this is not known to occur from ordinary food and beverage caffeine intake, or without use of medications containing caffeine.

Natural Girl is Your Source for Natural Product Updates & Reviews

The official blog of natural workz boutique. natural girl is your source for natural product updates & reviews.

Concern for the products that enter our bodies through our mouths is pretty straightforward. No one in his or her right mind would willingly drink a bottle of chlorine or munch a handful of lead. Indeed, humans and animals alike can very easily be poisoned and or affected in a multitude of ways if we ingest something toxic to our system. However, we are often in denial of the fact that products that touch our skin or that create vapors can be just as toxic.

Indeed it is commonplace for our society to overlook the fact that human skin is a living organ, which makes what we put on or next to our skin seriously important. Somehow, we think that our skin acts as a barrier, when in fact it can absorb toxins and environmental irritants just as easily as our digestive system. And, products that are absorbed through our skin can be especially dangerous because they go straight into our blood stream. At the least, toxins ingested through the mouth — if they don’t kill us first — have the opportunity to be cleaned out of our system through the digestive process. This is why alcoholics get cirrhosis of the liver. The body works so hard at clearing the alcohol out of their bodies’ that it eventually can’t keep up.

Similarly, the lung is a working organ and the only way for humans to get oxygen into our blood stream. Every time we inhale a chemical irritant we damage our lungs. Enough damage and the lungs start to lose their ability to repair themselves. Furthermore airborne irritants and toxins can aggravate the lungs for folks who already have breathing problems, such as asthma, even worse they can induce asthma in folks who were previously not at risk. Smoking may be the most common cause of lung cancer but it is not the only cause.

According to research collected by the EcoMom Alliance over 150 toxic chemicals are common to the average household. What is really bad news, is that many of these chemicals have been connected to increased incidence of asthma, allergies, cancers, and behavioral disorders.

Chemicals to avoid (more info at the Environmental Working Group):

  • Triclosan – antibacterial agent in soap. Reacts with chlorine to create chloroform a known carcinogen and it is showing up in water sources, humans and animals in unprecedented levels.
  • BPA – Is found in hard clear plastics, such as baby bottles, old Nalgene bottles, your Cuisinart food processor and more. BPA is more likely to leach when heated or in contact with fatty or acidic foods.
  • Fragrance (pththaltes) — this includes perfumes, but also extends to baby lotions and all sorts of bath and body products.
  • Oxybenzone – chemical blocker in sunscreen is a photo carcinogen itself, as well as, highly allergic to certain people. And, in Sweden they have recommended that at the least it should never be used on children under the age of two, because they don’t have adequate enzymes to eliminate in from their system.
  • PBDE and other fire retardants — Bad, bad, bad. Bad for you, bad for me, bad for baby, bad for fish, bad for everyone.
  • Lead – We’ve known about lead poisoning for eons. Why is this still a problem?
  • Chlorine — is a lung irritant and also toxic to aquatic systems

Non-toxic replacements:

  • Antibacterial soaps and wipes: warm water and hand soap; alcohol, thyme or tea tree oil based wipes. I am very fond of these non-toxic wipes by CleanWell. Be cautious with alcohol gels and wipes around toddlers and pre-school age kids – the concentration of alcohol can be toxic.
  • Buy glass or BPA free baby bottles & sippy cups; glass food storage containers and the like.
  • For sunscreen look for physical blockers (like Zinc) versus chemical blockers. Checkout how your favorite sunscreen (or body product) rates at the Skin Dip Cosmetic Database.
  • Filter tap water to reduce exposure to lead, chlorine and other water contaminates (most filters cannot remove Fluoride).
  • Cook with stainless steel pans and a little healthy olive or canola oil or use a seasoned cast iron skillet.
  • Use green cleaners, but watch out for preservatives (which can still be skin and lung irritants.
  • Eat your omega 3 fats and fish that are low in mercury; breastfeed your baby!
  • Use a sprig of pine; baking soda in the fridge or freezer; orange rind or lemon in your garbage disposal; bake a fresh pie or cookies; or a soy or beeswax candle to freshen your air!
  • Make your own non-toxic cleaners with baking soda, vinegar, borax and more!
