GIVING BACK

March 9th, 2010

Natural Workz is giving back … We are donating a % of the proceeds from our inspirational t shirts to Girl Talk, a mentoring program for young girls.

As some of you may already know, I grew up in foster care and that experience is where my passion came from to start my inspirational t shirts line to Inspire Real Life Success for young girls and I’m super excited to give back to Girl Talk  www.desiretoinspire.org

All children deserve a safe, happy life — including the 463,000 American children and youth in foster care. Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them.

But some children in foster care are less fortunate. Most communities across the country are urgently seeking more everyday people to help these youth overcome their troubled childhoods and realize their full potential. No matter what their age, every young person in foster care benefits from a meaningful connection to a caring adult who becomes a supportive and lasting presence in his or her life.

Take a closer look at the number and diversity of people who were once in foster care. It might surprise you. In fact, there are an estimated 12 million foster care alumni in the U.S. representing all walks of life.  Behind this startling statistic are countless stories of children who grew up to be thriving adults while others struggled with life’s challenges all alone. The difference between triumph and tragedy will become very clear as you read about these foster care alumni. Success stories come about when someone takes the time to offer comfort, provide support, give advice, or simply share a milestone moment with a youngster enduring a difficult family situation.

My mission is to help young girls Live life with passion, purpose and positivity and you can help … every t shirt you buy will help a girl … come visit us at http://www.naturalworkz.com and check out our line of inspirational tees.

“What Is A Friend”

February 28th, 2010

A Friend is someone who Sticks with you through the good times and bad times.’

Real friends are always by your side.

A Friend nourishes the spirit, encourages the heart!!

As We go through life So called Friends come and go …  What about the friend that says you have changed because you don’t do the things you did back in the day … I say you grow with me me or grow a part!!

Now let’s talk about the friend that’s needy and only calls you when they need something from you but when things are good, you don’t hear from them: I say if you can’t call when things are good and be a friend to me as well … I have to just let you go so don’t get mad when I stop calling you, I’m only being the friend you were to me!!

Okay, the friend that  always takes and Never gives, they always have something to do when you need them: Friendship is give and take & you get to the point that you are so over the friendship!!

The jealous friend she pretends to really like you but talks about you and your lifestyle but deep down inside wants to be like you: I  say,  We all can create what we want out of life so don’t hate but celebrate others … there is a plan for everyone’s life … let’s help & support each other!!

The Best Friend: They are your best friend as long as you  are doing what they want and need done and as long as you  agree with them, this is a friendship of  convenience, they always need you to do something and when they have a man and don’t need anything, you don’t see or hear from them but as soon as things fall a part as they always do then you are best friends again.

Who needs a friend like this?

One thing that I have learned about friends is if you don’t set boundaries with your friends you will be left feeling resentful and angry!!

Friends are special people. If you are a friend, it means you were chosen. You are not in someones life by happenstance, or by accident of birth. You’re in someone’s life because he or she wants you there.

Every friend is a gift from God. Treat each of your friends as the gift he or she is.

Unfortunately, some people don’t want to grow.  They either don’t want to change, or they don’t even realize they need to change so sometimes it’s hard to accept that the connection between friends sometime fades

“One who looks for a friend without faults will have none.”

“The only way to find a friend is to be one.”

“A true friend is someone who is there for you when they’d rather be somewhere else.”

A Friend understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still,  allows you to grow!!

“A true friend will never stand in your way unless you are on the way down.”

“Old friends leave, time flies by, memories are forever, they never die.”

“We don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change.”

Let’s talk about Lemons

January 14th, 2010

Let’s talk about Lemons

Lemons, the yellow tangy fruit that make my mouth water by just thinking about them, are not only rich in Vitamins C, B, and A, but they are also a great disinfectant, have anti-haemorrhagic properties, and keep the cholesterol level in check.

Lemons already have a long-time history and it is said the first lemons grew in India and China and later were introduced to Persia, Iran, and Egypt. Christopher Columbus brought the lemon seeds to the Americas.

Lemons are used for culinary uses, in skin care, and are a household multi-tasker:
  • In skin care, lemons are used to treat blemishes. Mix some lemon juice and honey, apply it to your cleansed face and rinse with warm water. Your blemishes will heal due to the astringent and antiseptic properties.
  • Lemons deodorize, disinfect, and remove grease and stains especially when mixed with baking soda.
  • Lemons are used in the treatment of wood and cashiers use lemons to moisturize their fingers when dealing with a lot of bills.
  • Lemons are a natural bleaching agent and can be used to remove stains as well as clean grout in the bathroom. Mix lemon juice with water and brush the grout with a toothbrush.
  • Lemon juice cleans silver, brass, and copper.
  • Lemons get rid of garlic odor on hands. Just rub your hands with a lemon slice and rinse with warm water.

The lemon rind has equally many uses in the culinary world as well as otherwise.
  • Lemon rind with Espresso – I’ve always wondered why I am being served a tiny piece of lemon rind with my espresso. So far, I have not been given a definite answer but several versions of applications have it that

  1. a) the lemon rind cleanses or disinfects the outside of the cup or the spoon (rub the yellow part around the edge of the cup or the back of the spoon)
  2. b) if the espresso is too bitter, the lemon wedge neutralizes the bitterness with its acidity. Be aware that the use of the lemon rind may just be an insult to the person who served you the espresso!

  • The rind is also used to make an Essential Oil which has various uses as well

  1. a) I use lemon essential oil in my drinking water or to flavor my foods. Important: use only 100% pure or Grade A essential oils for internal use!
  2. b) Lemon essential oil is a great air-freshener when diffused
  3. c) Lemon essential oils is also a mood enhancer as it lifts the spirit and works against depression.
  4. I also used lemon essential oil to clean glue and tape from my wooden floor.

As the saying goes “when life deals you lemons…” I only can say to use them wisely and remember, they disinfect, cleanse, deodorize, are great for your health, are antiseptic, and enhance your mood :-)

Breast Cancer Awareness

September 17th, 2009

Breast Cancer Awarenessrib3.gif - 3.2 K

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women.

Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year.

Risk factors for breast cancer include:

  • Age: Half of all women diagnosed are over age 65.
  • Weight: Being obese or overweight.
  • Diet & Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity, a diet high in saturated fat, and alcoholic intake of more than two drinks per day.
  • Menstrual & Reproductive History: Early menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age or not having given birth, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35.
  • Family & Personal History: A family history of breast cancer—particularly a mother, sister. or a personal history of breast cancer of benign (non-cancer) breast disease.
  • Medical & Other Factors: Dense breast tissue (often identified by a mammogram), past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area. A history of hormone treatments—such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes— including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others.

Breast Self-Exam (BSE)

Taking a few minutes to do a breast self-exam a minimum of once a month can make a lifetime of difference. Nearly 70% of all breast cancers are found through self-exams and with early detection the 5-year survival rate is 98%. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment with your doctor, but don’t panic—8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous. For additional peace of mind, call your doctor whenever you have concerns.

A series of studies concluded that women that consume fatty rich foods on a regular basis have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer. The fatality of breast cancer is greatly reduced if women eat large amounts of omega 3 aliments, such as fatty fish or brown kelp seaweed. Women who try to reduce the risk of developing this type of cancer can very well substitute meat for fish.

Scientists have linked the development and growth of breast cancer tumors to the improper balance between the amounts of fatty acids in the body

One of the questions I asked, was about environmental risks that might not be getting enough attention, and that many women might be unaware of. Several were brought to my attention, including “ionizing radiation” and “electromagnetic fields“. However, the one I found most disturbing, was about the chemicals that are known to be dangerous but are still being used in the packaging of our foods. So even when you are eating a healthy diet, you could still be ingesting many chemicals that could be harmful your health. Frustrating isn’t it?

For instance, there is a chemical called Bisphenol A that is a known carcinogenic used in many plastics, it even can be found in the lining of lids on canned foods. Since we don’t normally ingest plastic you may think this isn’t such a big deal…However, these chemical do not stay in the plastic, they leach out into the beverages and foods we are consuming each day (such as water in plastic bottles and canned soups, just to name a few). Efforts have been underway in California to discontinue the use of this chemical, but so far have been unsuccessful.

An estimated 100,000 synthetic chemicals have been registered for use in the United States in the last 40 years, but fewer than 10 percent of them have been fully tested for their effects on our health. Because many of these chemicals accumulate in body fat and remain in breast tissue for decades, every woman, man and child now carries synthetic chemicals in their bodies—including some that have been found to cause mammary tumors.

Ladies lets take care of ourselves and teach our daughters how to do the same and remember when prayers go up blessing come down!!

HOW TO DO A BREAST SELF-EXAM

Step 1

In the Shower

Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine the left breast, left hand for the right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts.

Step 2

Before a Mirror

Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Then rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women’s breasts do.

Step 3

Lying Down

Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. With the fingers of your left hand flat, press your right breast gently in small circular motions, moving vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast.

How Caffeine Affects Kids

A stimulant that affects kids and adults similarly, caffeine is a drug that’s naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. Caffeine is also made artificially and added to certain foods. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system. At lower levels, it can make people feel more alert and energetic.

In both kids and adults, too much caffeine can cause:

  • jitteriness and nervousness
  • upset stomach
  • headaches
  • difficulty concentrating
  • difficulty sleeping
  • increased heart rate

Especially in young kids, it doesn’t take a lot of caffeine to produce these effects.

Other reasons to limit kids’ caffeine consumption include:

  • Kids who consume one or more 12-ounce (355-milliliter) sweetened soft drink per day are 60% more likely to be obese.
  • Drinking too many sweetened caffeinated drinks could lead to dental cavities (or caries) from the high sugar content and the erosion of tooth enamel from acidity. Not convinced that sodas can wreak that much havoc on kids’ teeth? Consider this: One 12-ounce (355-milliliter) nondiet, carbonated soft drink contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar (49 milliliters) and 150 calories.
  • Caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to eliminate water (through urinating), which may contribute to dehydration. Whether the amount of caffeine in beverages is enough to actually cause dehydration is not clear, however. It may depend on whether the person drinking the beverage is used to caffeine and how much caffeine was consumed that day. To be on the safe side, it’s wise to avoid excessive caffeine consumption in hot weather, when kids need to replace water lost through perspiration.
  • Abruptly stopping caffeine may cause withdrawal symptoms (headaches, muscle aches, temporary depression, and irritability), especially for those who are used to consuming a lot.
  • Caffeine can aggravate heart problems or nervous disorders, and some kids may not be aware that they’re at risk.
  • Not only do caffeinated beverages contain empty calories (calories that don’t provide any nutrients), but kids who fill up on them don’t get the vitamins and minerals they need from healthy sources, putting them at risk for nutritional deficiencies. In particular, kids who drink too much soda (which usually starts between the third and eighth grades) may miss getting the calcium they need from milk to build strong bones and teeth.

What’s in your Products?

August 24th, 2009

Commercial products are typically loaded with preservatives to allow them to remain fresh during the long span between the time of manufacture and the time the customer finishes using it. Although the preservatives do extend the longevity of the products but  preservatives themselves are unhealthy. Many cause or promote skin problems and some are even reported to be linked to cancer.

It is very important to use preservative-free products.

Green Smoothies

August 20th, 2009

Did you know that through one green smoothie you can consume 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables? Did you also know that eating green smoothies is one of the easiest way to digest the full nutrients of fruits and vegetables?

Green Smoothies

They can assist in boosting energy, building your immune system, detoxing impurities, and loosing weight. Greens are rich in magnesium and alkaline minerals like calcium and are superb in their Omega-3 unsaturated fat content.  Believe it or not, greens are one of the richest sources of protein.

The best combination is a balance of 40% greens to 60% fruits. Keep the greens varied as well. Spinach is our favorite, in addition to kale. Other options include:  celery, chard, romaine, alfalfa, parsley, beet greens, and collard greens.

I have found you can make a green smoothie out of pretty much any fruit and greens combination! Green Smoothies are aslo a great way to get your kids to eat veggies without a fight.

Green Smoothie blender

Check out the vita mix blender.

Next time your out shopping, grab some baby spinach and don’t be shy when you add it to your daily smoothie (if you’re not having a daily smoothie, you need to start. They are a powerhouse of nutrition, they taste great and they are quick to make.

Your body can absorb more of the vitamins and minerals than if you ate the fruits and vegetables whole. Many of the nutrients are stuck in the fiber and by blending fruits and vegetables, you break down the fiber and release the vital nutrients into a form your body can more easily use.

Brain Power Smoothie:

6 – 8 ounces of organic apple juice, almond milk or rice milk

¼ cup frozen organic blueberries or other frozen organic fruit

2 TBS of freshly ground organic flax seed

1 ripe banana

¼ cup organic strawberries

Put in smoothie maker or blend and enjoy twice a day for awesome mental alertness and ability to think clearer.

It’s a lifestyle you will never want to quit living!!

What is Endometriosis?

August 10th, 2009

Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial cells outside the uterus. The growths are commonly referred to as “endometrial implants.”

“An estimated 89 million women and girls worldwide have endometriosis”

Diagnosis of endometriosis usually involves a laparoscopy, a complete medical history, a physical examination, and other tests.

Endometrial implants typically inset in other parts of the reproductive tract, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the inside lining of the abdominal cavity, and the outside surfaces of the uterus or intestines. They can also occur in other parts of the body, including the liver, legs, lungs, and rarely, the brain.

The implants are not malignant (cancerous), but the disease may be progressive and symptoms worsen as the patient experiences more menstrual cycles. Because they are made of the same uterine tissue that is shed during menstruation, endometrial implants also break up monthly. The result is internal bleeding, inflammation, chronic pelvic pain, and the formation of blood-filled cysts and scar tissue. Pain is the most prevalent symptom, and nearly 90% of women with chronic pelvic pain have endometriosis.

Scar tissue in the fallopian tubes can interrupt an egg’s passage, resulting in infertility. Some patients do not know they have endometriosis until they have an infertility evaluation. As many as 50% of infertile women have endometriosis. About one-third of women with endometriosis do not experience symptoms.

There are many medical causes of endometriosis. Any woman can experience the pain and/or infertility associated with endometrial implants.

What are endometrial cells?

The endometrium is the mucous surface that lines the inside of the uterus. It contains several layers of cells (i.e., endometrial cells) that vary in appearance and number throughout the menstrual cycle, as the levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. During the luteal phase (the two-week period just before a woman bleeds), for example, the endometrium is thick, its cells are enlarged, the glands bulge, and the arteries are swollen. At menstruation, the endometrium sheds. Following menstruation, new cells grow and the endometrium regenerates. The cells that make up the endometrium normally grow only inside the uterus.

Endometriosis is associated with a variety of symptoms, but there is no consistent pattern and not all women are symptomatic. The two most common symptoms are pain and infertility. Over time, depending on where the endometrial tissue has implanted, other symptoms may appear.

The most common symptom is chronic pelvic pain that generally occurs just before and during menstruation and then decreases after menstruation. About 25% to 67% of women with endometriosis suffer dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). About 25% experience painful intercourse. Pelvic examinations can also be painful.

Infertility is common. In fact, infertility is the most common symptom that prompts a visit to the doctor’s office for diagnosis.

Endometriosis that develops in other parts of the pelvic region may result in bowel-related or urinary tract symptoms (e.g., painful or difficult bowel movements, bloody urine). If the lungs are involved, endometriosis may cause pleuritic pain (the pleura is the thin layer of tissue that coats and protects the lungs) or hemoptysis. If endometrial cells implant in the brain, the patient may experience seizures.

Endometriosis may be caused by retrograde menstruation, coelomic metaplasia, and congenital factors. The immune system may allow endometrial cells to establish themselves in other parts of the body and exposure to dioxin and related environmental toxins may also play a role.

Retrograde menstruation (also known as “reverse menstruation”) occurs when blood and endometrial tissue back up into the fallopian tubes and enter the pelvic and abdominal cavities instead of flowing out through the cervix and vagina. Reverse menstruation is common, occurring in about 90% of women, and may cause endometriosis.

“Metaplasia” refers to the transformation of one kind of tissue into another. Coelomic metaplasia refers to cells that transform into endometrial cells, perhaps as a result of chronic inflammation or irritation from retrograde menstrual blood.

Endometriosis may be a congenital condition (existed from birth). During fetal development, uterine tissue may remain in the pelvis and grow as a result of hormonal influence.

There may also be a link between exposure to certain chemicals also known as Xenohormones and endometriosis. Research on rhesus monkeys shows a link between exposure to dioxin and endometriosis. The greater the exposure to dioxin, the more severe the endometriosis. Dioxin is a byproduct of pesticide (manufacturing and use) and bleached pulp and paper products manufacturing. The chemical can also be produced through burning of hazardous waste and can lead to Estrogen Dominance which increases the risks of developing endometriosis and once you have it making your symptoms worse.

Endometriosis is usually diagnosed on the basis of a history of pelvic pain, a physical examination, and a laparoscopy. Pelvic pain is symptomatic of many disorders, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy. It is not definitive.

Laparoscopy is the most important diagnostic tool for endometriosis. Not all women require a laparascopy, however. Patients with mild or moderate symptoms often choose natural alternative treatment.

About 90% of women with pelvic pain have endometriosis. Pelvic pain that is typical of endometriosis includes menstrual cramps, low back pain that worsens during menstruation, and pain in the pelvis that occurs during or after sexual intercourse. Depending on where the implants are located, a woman may feel pain in her rectum during defecation.

A pelvic examination involves the physician feeling and looking for abnormalities that are associated with endometriosis. Physical findings depend on the severity and location of the condition. There may be palpable nodules or tenderness in the pelvic region, enlarged ovaries, a tipped-back (retrodisplaced or retroflexed) uterus, or lesions on the vagina or on surgical scars.

A laparoscopy is an exploratory procedure that permits the physician to see inside the pelvic region to observe endometrial growths. The procedure involves making a small incision near the navel and inserting a laparascope (long, thin, lighted instrument). Usually, the endometrial implants can easily be seen. Because endometrial implants vary in appearance and can be mistaken for other conditions, the lesions usually must be surgically removed and examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. After laparoscopy, patients can usually resume normal activities in about a day.

Endometriosis is usually not a problem as long as a woman menstruates, but treatment can relieve the pain and restore fertility. Treatment depends on whether the primary goal is to relieve pain, restore fertility, or both.

Herbal medicine is the treatment of disease using medicinal plants, both internally and externally, to restore the patient back to health. It is a system of medicine that relies on the therapeutic qualities of plants to help the patient by enhancing the body’s own recuperative powers. It is a natural method of healing based on the traditional usage of herbs coupled with modern scientific developments.

Though there are those in the orthodox medical world who ignore herbal medicine, even condemn it, the constituents of herbs have provided the blueprint for many of the most effective and widely known drugs used today. ‘Orthodox’ medicine has its roots in herbal medicine.

Orthodox medicine is based on drugs isolated from plants, or more often manufactured in the laboratory. The herbalist advocates the use of the whole plant as a gentler and safer way to restoring a women to health.

For the treatment of Endometriosis, one of the first tasks in herbal medicine is to try and re-balance the hormone levels in the body. Then other herbs will be introduced to strengthen the immune system so that the body can then begin to eliminate the disease. As with other alternative treatments, using herbal medicine for Endometriosis will involve a time commitment to achieve success.

Natural Alternatives for Endometriosis

Herbal Formula (ProSoothe)

ProSoothe is an all natural herbal formula that significantly improves uterine fibroids and pelvic pain/cramps, irritability, tension, mood swings, acne, headaches, breast pain, bloating and weight gain.

Also found in this synergistic herbal formula is dandelion and vitex,(chaste tree) that helps the body remove exogenous,(external excess estrogen)from hormone therapy or contaminated food,(xenosteroids).

With time the monthly pains gradually subside as monthly bleeding in these islets becomes less, and healing of the inflammatory sites occurs.

Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains gamma-linolenic acid which is an omega-6 fatty acid. Omega-6 fatty acids decrease inflammation which helps with aberrant endometrial islets which respond monthly to the hormonal changes and become inflamed and shed like normal menstrual tissue.

Exercise. Though many women can’t begin to think of exercising when they’re in so much pain, it’s proven that just ten minutes of moderate activity can release endorphins into your body. And these endorphins provide your body with similar effects that morphine does, so pain can be dramatically reduced.

If you’re in a lot of pain however, then you won’t be able to do any major strenuous exercising. Try lower impact exercises such as swimming, walking or yoga instead.

2. Yoga. This has become a popular natural treatment for endometriosis, because it teaches you how to be more aware of your body, and integrates relaxation and meditation techniques which can help sooth, calm, relieve tension, and reduce pain.

3. Accupuncture, Aromatherapy, and Massage. Massage is a well known technique that helps soothe and relax sore or painful muscles. The gentle contact is also thought to be soothing psychologically as well. Aromatherapy is used with certain essential oils that are known for stimulating endorphins and encouraging relaxation. Acupuncture also works by stimulating endorphins and certain types of hormones too.

4. Dietary changes. Many women have found that certain foods actually stimulate more pain, and by avoiding these foods they find themselves virtually pain free during their periods. Tomatoes for instance, can cause severe increases in pain for some women with endometriosis, so avoiding those and other problem foods helps reduce the problems drastically.

Other women have had excellent success with food changes that are designed to limit or restrict candida yeast growth. Some of these natural techniques include reducing sugars and simple carbohydrates; avoiding wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, and refined foods; and increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in your diet.

Omega 3 fatty acids can be increased with simple fish or flax oil supplements, or you can start eating more fresh fish or flax seeds too.

There are also foods which can help balance your hormone levels. Some of these include garlic, broccoli, apples, parsley, nuts and seeds, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, carrots, rhubarb, and sage.

5. Vitamins and Minerals. Women who suffer from endometriosis can often get natural relief by improving their vitamin and mineral intake. This can be done through foods, but it can also be done using herbal supplements. Increasing calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, Vitamins A, B, C, and E can all help dramatically with a variety of symptoms and problems that come with endometriosis.

What About Kids’ Nutrition At School?

August 8th, 2009

We give our kids all this sugar & we wonder why they are so hyper and can’t focus…..

At the beginning of each school year, I discuss with my son’s teacher that I do not want my child given sugar or other refined food products as rewards in the classroom. You do have that right to ask the teacher not to provide your kid with junk food—just like you wouldn’t expect her provide your kid with junk curriculum! Put it on that form they have you fill out the first day, under “allergies,” if you want.

I always  provide the teacher with some whole-food snacks to put in her drawer, whole-grain, naturally sweetened granola bars, for instance). That way, when a parent brings birthday cupcakes or donuts at 9 a.m., my child doesn’t go without a treat but also doesn’t have a blood-sugar jolt in the form of toxic food.

3 smoothies to go

It is so very important what we put in our kids body, it affects how they learn and how they feel & act during the day. Every parent is not going to like or understand but if you purchase the snacks that you want your child to eat then you should not have any problems. Remember … Natural Workz Best!!

Caffeine’s Effects on the Developing Fetus

August 5th, 2009

Caffeine easily passes from mother to fetus through the placenta. A developing fetus may have higher, sustained blood levels of caffeine than its mother because of immature metabolism.3 A few studies have shown that even moderate caffeine consumption affects fetal heart rate and movement patterns.3 A pregnant woman’s ability to metabolize caffeine slows as pregnancy progresses, so some of its effects may increase later in pregnancy. Some studies have found that pregnant women who consumed large quantities of caffeine (five or more cups of coffee a day) were twice as likely to miscarry as those who consumed less, while fewer or no effects were seen at lower levels of caffeine consumption.

High caffeine consumption during pregnancy may shorten gestation and lower birth weight. Both effects appear modest in terms of days and ounces, but may be important to an infant already compromised by prematurity or fetal growth restriction. Such effects have not been consistently linked to moderate consumption. A reported link between heavy maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and increased risk of SIDS8 has not been supported by further studies. Breast milk can transfer caffeine from mother to baby. Very high caffeine intake by a nursing mother may make her baby irritable, with disturbed sleep cycles, but this is not known to occur from ordinary food and beverage caffeine intake, or without use of medications containing caffeine.
